'No man's land': BBC pundit slams Liverpool player who was bailed out by his teammate at Spurs today

Trent Alexander-Arnold was on the winning side for Liverpool this week but that doesn’t mean he escaped criticism in the game.

Alexander-Arnold has come under the microscope so much this season already. A number of defensive howlers have seen the Liverpool man criticised. And with it, his place in the England squad for the Euros has also been called into question.

Today, then, Alexander-Arnold was once again under the spotlight. And in the 28th minute of the game, the Englishman’s defensive frailties were pointed out again. This time, by the BBC’s Glenn Murray. The former Brighton man spotted Trent being out of position to allow Ryan Sessegnon past him.

“Konate made himself big and hard to beat and robbed the ball from Sessegnon.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold was in no man’s land and Sessegnon just ran past him. The position of the Liverpool right back has got to be a little bit better,” Murray said on BBC comms.

For Alexander-Arnold, this little blip didn’t matter in the end. But the Liverpool man didn’t get away with much in the game really. Jamie Redknapp also criticised the right-back for nearly gifting Tottenham a penalty as well.

TBR’s View: Trent continues to struggle defensively

Had Kulusevski been fit from the start and Heung-Min Son been available, this might have been a torrid day for Alexander-Arnold.

For whatever reason, he just seems to struggle so much with positional sense at times. Yes, he’s brilliant at what he does further up the pitch. But defensively, he is a bomb scare for Liverpool at times.

This will continue through the season though. Trent will continue to be scrutinised for every minor error and at the end of the day, that’s how it is playing for Liverpool. He won’t care today, mind. Three points is three points and he played his part.
