‘It’s quite simple’: BBC pundit rips into Tottenham player for 68th minute moment v Portsmouth

Tottenham squeezed their past Portsmouth and into the next round of the FA Cup, thanks once again to a Harry Kane rescue job.

The Spurs striker once again got the crucial goal as Antonio Conte’s men edged past Pompey. But overally, and not for the first time this season, it was an underwhelming performance from Tottenham.

Despite picking a strong side, Conte saw his team struggle to really find any groove. One of the players who got a big chance in the game was Oliver Skipp. The midfielder was brought in late on as Yves Bissouma had a problem just before kick off.

But rather than seize his moment, Skipp plodded through the game and missed a golden chance to get his name on the score sheet in the 68th minute. And watching on for the BBC, former Wales defender Danny Gabbidon felt Skipp should have done so much better.

“Oliver Skipp should score, it’s quite simple,” Gabbidon said.

“I thought there was a possible offside but he needs to show a bit more composure, go with the side foot. He just lashes at the ball and blazes over the bar.”

Oliver Skipp is a decent enough midfield player with a lot to offer. But he’s not the main choice under Conte and despite getting a chance today, you have to say he fluffed his lines.

This has been part of Spurs’ problem in general really. Rather than having a squad deep in quality who all push each other, Conte sees time and again his fringe players not deliver.

Yes, this was just one moment in the game from Skipp. But getting a goal can be a big confidence boost. The midfielder will be gutted here, and will hope to get more opportunities from Conte in the future.
