BBC pundit says the best position of Leeds 30-year-old is a “big dilemma”
Noel Whelan has claimed there is a “big dilemma” when it comes to the best position of Leeds United’s Rodrigo Moreno.
Rodrigo, 30, has had a difficult first season at Elland Road that has been stop-start due to injuries.
However, the left-footed attacker is finishing the campaign strongly, which included an excellent assist in Tuesday night’s Premier League win over Southampton.
The £57,000-a-week Spaniard has six goals in 27 Leeds games across all competitions since his arrival from Valencia.
BBC pundit Whelan has pointed out that he’s still not convinced over where his best position is.
He can provide cover for first-choice striker Patrick Bamford in the number nine role and has found success there. Likewise, he looks a natural fit with his vision and creativity dropping deeper into a number 10 pocket.
“That’s the big dilemma, isn’t it?” Whelan told BBC Radio Leeds when asked if Rodrigo is a better number nine or number 10.
“And the big decision we have got to make because tonight we saw a pass that was from a number 10. Two goals at the weekend we saw from a number 9 player.
“He himself says he is a number 10. I think he can play both. I think he is one of these players that is never going to stick up against a centre-half and play back to him, he is always going to come into that number 10 role.”
Bamford’s amazing individual season this year means he 100 per cent deserves to keep his starting position going into the next campaign.
Rodrigo is a brilliant option to have as back-up to Bamford, but he should be in the starting XI alongside him.
Rodrigo’s versatility is a strength at Elland Road given the way manager Marcelo Bielsa operates, but he’s got the quality to become a permanent fixture in the team in a creative position.
The Yorkshire club can become even more exciting to watch with an extra creative spark, so Rodrigo is someone that fans should be hoping for more from going into next season.
