Liverpool midfielder James Milner has been praised by BBC Sport pundit Micah Richards, who described the Reds veteran as a player who “can just keep on going” like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and could easily still be playing in the Premier League at 40.

The 35-year-old, who made his professional debut for Leeds United in 2002 aged just 16, has made an incredible 750 competitive club appearances during his career, as well as winning 61 England caps and 46 for the nation’s Under-21s.

Milner remains one of the most professional talents in the English top flight, and not only does he have 231 competitive appearances for Liverpool under his belt, but remains firmly in Jurgen Klopp’s plans and is showing no signs of stopping.

Richards expects Milner to remain at the top level for the next couple of years, telling BBC Sport: “Whenever I’m asked about the level of professionalism every player should aspire to, I use him as the example. He doesn’t drink alcohol and he is probably fitter now than I was in my prime.

“There’s no sign of him stopping, either. He left City for Liverpool in 2015 for more game time, and he still has that hunger. Like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, he is one of those players who can just keep on going. I honestly think Milner could still be playing in the Premier League aged 40, if he wants to.”

Given the intensity of the Premier League, it’s rare for outfield players to still be turning out in the competition in their 40s, but it can be done, as seen with Teddy Sheringham and Ryan Giggs.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Milner join this select club, given how much he looks after himself and how fit he is, not to mention still playing a big role in Klopp’s squad courtesy of being, as Richards said, “good at everything”.
