BBC pundit draws Thierry Henry comparisons when it comes to Liverpool's Cody Gakpo
Liverpool are taking on Brighton and Hove Albion today and Martin Keown believes the Reds have signed a star in the form of Cody Gakpo.
Gakpo has arrived in Liverpool from PSV after the Reds moved quickly to tie a deal up after the World Cup ended.
With Darwin Nunez out, Gakpo was selected to start for Liverpool v Brighton. And assessing the Dutchman and Liverpool ahead of kick off, former Arsenal man Keown paid Gakpo a big compliment.
“Liverpool’s front players don’t press nearly as much as they used to. The philosophy is the same but the application isn’t. They continue use a high line but how many one-on-ones have we seen? The most in the Premier League. The adjustment hasn’t been made,” Keown said prior to kick off for the BBC.
“Cody Gakpo will play centrally today though and I do think he is a special player. He’s a Thierry Henry type player, he’s got that stature: he’s quick, he’s strong.”
Of course, Keown knows all about the talents Thierry Henry brought to the table at Arsenal. Gakpo has a long way to go until he hits that level.
TBR’s View: Gakpo can shine for Liverpool
There’s no doubt Cody Gakpo is a top player who has a lot of talent in the locker. He has a long way to get to Henry’s level, but Keown’s comments on him here are a nice touch.
Gakpo will be hoping to hit the ground running and get off the mark ASAP. At the time of writing, Liverpool were 0-0 with Brighton, with the Seagulls impressing yet again.
The Dutchman will know he needs to find the net to be considered a success at Anfield. But he will get patience, and over time, he should prove a fine signing for the Reds.
