Liverpool have three big contract situations to deal with this season, and those issues are starting to come into the spotlight now.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are in the final year of their respective deals, while Mohamed Salah spoke about his future at the weekend.

Salah set tongues wagging as he stated that he’s not spoken to anyone at Liverpool about a new contract, suggesting this could be his final season at Anfield.

Speaking on the Planet Premier League Podcast, Nedum Onuoha has been discussing Salah’s situation, and he says that he’s very surprised by how Liverpool have handled this.

Nedum Onuoha shocked by Mohamed Salah situation

Onuoha shared his verdict on Salah’s current position.

“Personally I am very surprised when a club of that scale allows a player to enter the final year of their contract and there hasn’t been a discussion,” Onuoha said.

“They can’t be surprised to see those three guys in the last year of the deal. The way he spoke about it. What a dangerous player to be enjoying a year of football.

“It doesn’t feel right to me. When they have an asset like Mo Salah talking about leaving the club at the end of the year, does that help the club long-term? I’m not sure. Something feels off there. Surely those three players aren’t leaving at the end of the season, surely.”

Mohamed Salah situation is difficult

Onuoha says he’s shocked about Salah’s situation, but it is somewhat understandable.

Let’s not forget, there’s been a lot of change at Liverpool this summer. A new Sporting Director has come in, a new manager has arrived, and the transfer window has only just closed.

It’s easy to see why Salah’s situation has fallen down the pecking order in terms of matters of importance.

Liverpool still have months to sort this out, and with the transfer window closed and Salah making comments in the public eye, it wouldn’t be a shock at all if negotiations quickly started over a potential new contract for the Egyptian.
