Jonathan Woodgate has told BBC Sport that the save from Hugo Lloris to deny Marcus Rashford Manchester United’s third goal against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday was incredible.

The trip to Old Trafford proved to be a miserable one for Spurs. Antonio Conte’s side were absolutely second best throughout the contest. And they rarely looked like scoring.

The home side were able to score twice in the second-half to pick up an impressive three points. But the scoreline would have been so much more emphatic had it not been for one inspired performance from Lloris.

The Frenchman could do absolutely nothing about either goal. The first took a wicked deflection. And the second came from a brilliant finish from Bruno Fernandes.

Lloris made a number of superb saves in the first-half. But perhaps his best of the evening came when Rashford created a yard of space for himself midway through the second-half.

The Englishman fired a shot from close range towards the far corner. But somehow, Lloris was able to get a strong hand to the ball and push it away. It was a remarkable stop. And Woodgate was full of praise for the skipper.

“That is an incredible save! I thought it was in. A strong hand from Lloris and it’s another fantastic save from the Frenchman,” he told BBC Sport.

Of course, a goalkeeper’s performance is about a lot more than just their shot-stopping. But Lloris showed on Wednesday that he remains one of the best in the division on that front.

He continues to be a world-class performer. The worry for Conte is that he was needed so often at Old Trafford. The number of saves he made was approaching double figures.

Obviously, Conte will be pleased with Lloris’ performance. But he will hope to not see him be that busy again this season.
