BBC pundit issues verdict on Destiny Udogie display in Tottenham win

Matt Jarvis was full of praise for Destiny Udogie after the Tottenham Hotspur left-back bailed the side out in the early stages of the second-half against Bournemouth on Sunday.

It was remarkable that the contest at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium remained 1-0 for as long as it did following Pape Matar Sarr’s ninth minute goal. The likes of Dominic Solanke and Richarlison missed brilliant chances for either side.

But while Spurs lacked quality at times, one player who stood out during the contest was Destiny Udogie.

Destiny Udogie outstanding for Tottenham

Udogie has been a revelation this season, proving to be one of the very best left-backs in the Premier League. It is somewhat amazing to think that he had not made his debut in the competition before the start of the campaign.

Cherries boss Andoni Iraola praised Udogie ahead of the game following his display on the south coast earlier in the season.

And speaking on BBC Radio Five Live (broadcast on 31/12; 15:11), Matt Jarvis suggested that he had been really impressed by the Italian’s performance.

“Yeah, once again, great defending by Udogie. He’s kept this Spurs side in this a number of times, using his power and his pace to get back into the correct position and helping out a teammate. He’s been a top player for them today,” he said.

“He’s been outstanding today, he really has. He’s done so well defensively. The athleticism, the strength and the positioning, he’s been outstanding in that backline,” he went on to add.

Spurs secure another important win

Tottenham definitely rode their luck at times on Sunday afternoon. On another day, Solanke, in particular, could have had another hat-trick.

But that is the way Ange Postecoglou’s side play. They do take risks. And they do rely on a lot of last-ditch defending.

Udogie is absolutely outstanding at that.

He is proving to be a superb signing for Tottenham. And Spurs secured such an important win in their bid to get their potential title charge back on track.
