BBC pundit impressed by ‘skilful’ 25-year-old Arsenal star
Danny Murphy is convinced that Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe is a talented player who just needs to nail down a regular starting position to show his true ability.
Pepe, who joined the Gunners back in 2019 under former boss Unai Emery, has had a turbulent time in his two years at the Emirates Stadium.
The left-footed winger has had the colossal £72million (BBC) price tag hanging over him since his arrival from Lille. And his form has been inconsistent.
However, he’s gone under the radar somewhat this campaign, and could end up with a decent goal return.
He netted twice in the midweek Premier League win over Crystal Palace, which now means he’s got 14 goals and five assists across all competitions this season. The versatile attacker looks most effective cutting inside when he starts as a right-winger.
BBC pundit Murphy raved about Pepe following his latest league outing.
“I think he suffered from the pressure of the price tag, but he’s certainly got talent,” Murphy told Match of the Day.
“He’s quick, skilful, direct. Like so many players he’s been up and down with his form. Today he showed those bits of magic we’ve seen from him on occasions. Goals ultimately is where you’re judged as a forward player.
“He looked hungry. He looked sharp. He looked fit… He’s got 14 goals this season which isn’t a bad return considering they’ve (Arsenal) had a poor season.
“Hopefully for Arenal fans they’ll see him progress a bit more next season. He’s got to play regularly. He’s got to produce this kind of form week in week out to keep the likes of Bukayo Saka out.”
If you look at Pepe’s Arsenal career so far at face value, he’s been a decent option for the north London club that has had spells of really good form.
Unfortunately, it’s not been enough for a £70million-plus player.
The Ivory Coast international has the technique and individual ability to be a key man within this Gunners team, so he needs to try use his end of season form as a springboard into the next one.
