Leeds United midfielder Ilia Gruev has been praised by BBC Sport pundit Matthew Upson for his efforts in Tuesday’s FA Cup fourth-round replay triumph.
Daniel Farke‘s Whites were taken to extra time by Plymouth Argyle, but they stepped up during this period and scored three goals to win 4-1.
Gruev has had to bide his time at Leeds since his move to Elland Road, but he’s quickly becoming an important player for Farke.
And on Tuesday, the 23-year-old’s efforts were key in helping Leeds overcome a valiant Pilgrims side to book a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Gruev was outstanding in midfield, weighing in with numerous big tackles to prevent the opposition from fashioning many good chances.

The cherry on top for the Bulgaria international – and for Leeds – was his late corner that forced an own goal from Ryan Hardie.
Upson loved what he saw from Gruev. He said on BBC One, via the BBC Sport website: “Gruev has been at the heart of everything Leeds have done in and out of possession.”
Leeds United ace Ilia Gruev was ‘impressive’
Beren Cross of Leeds Live gave the midfielder a 7 out of 10 rating for his efforts on the night.
“Left a little more exposed than he would have liked with a lot of ground to cover, but the Bulgarian was, nonetheless, impressive,” wrote Cross.
“Put strong, important tackles in, but saw more of his impressive service tonight. Passes forward really caught the eye.”
All in all, a great display from Gruev and from Leeds as a whole, as they rode out a tricky 90 minutes to sink the Pilgrims in the end.
Leeds will face Chelsea or Aston Villa, who replay their fourth-round tie on Wednesday.
Up next for the Whites is Saturday’s Championship derby with fellow Yorkshire outfit Rotherham United at Elland Road.
