Matthew Upson suggested that he saw a player pinch the ball off Bukayo Saka for the first time this season as he praised Luton Town for taking the game to Arsenal on Tuesday night.

Upson was speaking on BBC Radio Five Live as the Gunners were forced to really dig in against the Hatters at Kenilworth Road.

Bukayo Saka was involved in the opening goal of the game, setting up Gabriel Martinelli for his sixth assist of the campaign in the top-flight. However, Luton were extremely impressive and quickly bounced back, equalising shortly after.

Matthew Upson stunned to see Bukayo Saka lose possession in Arsenal game

Rob Edwards’ side were physical and really did their best to not allow Arsenal to play their natural game. And they were superb at limiting the success the Gunners had.

There was one moment where Alfie Doughty did superbly to poach the ball from Saka and drive his side up the pitch. And Matthew Upson noted that that moment really stood out to him due to how rare it is to see the 22-year-old not keep the ball.

“How many times have you seen a player take the ball off Saka like that this season? I haven’t seen that yet. That was just a real gamble, maybe a bit of a risk from Doughty. But it paid off,” he told BBC Radio Five Live.

Gunners pass another tough test

A lot of questions were asked of Arsenal during the first-half. Luton played to their strengths and really tried to put the Gunners off their game.

However, Mikel Arteta’s men stood up to the challenge and played some really impressive football. Ben White did superbly to set up Gabriel Jesus for the goal which put Arsenal back in front.

Luton are proving to be incredibly difficult to beat so far this season. So those moments of real quality from the visitors will mean a lot to Arteta on an evening which could have been really problematic for the league leaders.

It certainly says everything about how good Saka has been that Upson could not quite believe he lost possession quite cheaply.
