Former Tottenham Hotspur player and current BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has included Tottenham star Heung-min Son in his latest Premier League team of the week and in doing so, aimed a thinly veiled barb at Spurs boss Jose Mourinho.
The South Korean had another impactful performance for Tottenham in their last fixture, scoring the opening goal as Spurs defeated Newcastle United 2-1.
It took his tally to two goals and three assists in the seven games since the restart and 18 goals and 12 assists in total this season.
But despite Tottenham losing just once since the restart and claiming a win at the weekend, Crooks was not impressed and suggested the performances of Son were papering over the cracks for the Portuguese boss.
“Son is in great form at the moment. His goal was well taken but his overall play is currently outstanding. However, these Jekyll and Hyde performances from Spurs are becoming a little wearing.
No-one knows what sort of performance you’re going to get from the north Londoners these days…
“It’s just as well Son is on top of his game at the moment. The South Korean might save Tottenham’s season and to some extent Mourinho’s overblown reputation.”
There is no doubt that Mourinho’s Tottenham is not looking a major improvement on Mauricio Pochettino’s. Indeed, the style of football being played is not the same and some Tottenham fans are finding the change a little turgid.
But Spurs are in with a good chance of making the Europa League after wins against Newcastle United and Arsenal. After the disastrous start to the season, that would be a fairly impressive accomplishment, even if Tottenham fans are not enjoying the style of play on the pitch.
