BBC pundit believes 29-year-old Liverpool star is turning into one of the Premier League's greatest
BBC pundit Danny Murphy believes that Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is turning into one of the greatest Premier League goalkeepers.
In yesterday’s FA Cup semi-final between Manchester City and Liverpool at Wembley, Jurgen Klopp opted against rotating his goalkeepers.
The German has played Caoimhin Kelleher eight times this season and it was the Republic of Ireland international who played in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea ahead of the Brazilian.
But unlike Pep Guardiola, the former Borussia Dortmund manager decided to go with the world class experienced stopper in his starting line-up.
The contrasting decisions from the two managers in that specific position had a huge outcome on the match.
The call to play Zack Steffen in only his fourth City match of the year was the key selection decision at Wembley.
Sadio Mane pounced on the American’s sloppiness with the ball at his feet and he slid the ball into the back of the net to double Liverpool’s lead inside 20 minutes.
While City looked undercooked in that position, Alisson made a crucial save from his compatriot Gabriel Jesus when the Citizens were trying to fight back at 3-1.
Former Liverpool midfielder Murphy described Alisson’s save as “brilliant” and he was full of praise for the former Roma man after lift made the final.
Speaking via the Daily Mail, Murphy said: “As for Alisson, he is turning into one of the greatest Premier League goalkeepers and if he stays at the club could one day be seen as a true Liverpool goalkeeping legend alongside Ray Clemence.”
The 29-year-old is having a great season and has 22 clean sheets from 43 appearances this season. He’s become a key part of Klopp’s side since joining four years ago, and with Liverpool pursuing an unprecedented quadruple, the South American has the chance to further cement himself in Liverpool folklore.
