Pep’s Motivation

Finally, it would be amiss not to mention Bayern despite the fact that it is their consistent excellence which has made the Bundesliga, as a spectacle, a blunted sword. Their fate this season will actually be genuinely interesting; can Guardiola keep up the intensity of the previous two and a half seasons in his final six months at the club?

The scenario is obviously reminiscent of the final few months under Jupp Heynckes, a legend of German football since the 1960s, who took the club to the treble just months before Pep took over. Guardiola himself has claimed he’d prefer to be remembered for the football his sides have played rather than the trophies he has won, but considering the side he took over and the players he has subsequently signed, he can only be seen as a failure at Bayern if the club don’t end up winning the Champions League under his stewardship.

In the league, it’ll be interesting to see if he increases of reduces the brand of touchline histrionics which has seen him physically intimidating fourth officials and acting with severe disrespect to some of his opposition managers. Whatever the case, it’ll be interesting to observe for fans of English football, given that the former Al-Ahli player hasn’t wasted any time in announcing his interest in managing on these shores.
