Bayern have won the Bundesliga, but why should you still watch it in 2016?

Mönchengladbach at the Crossroads

You know the story of Gladbach’s season so far – or at least ought to. Five straight league defeats opened the season for the Foals before previous coach Lucien Favre left, and interim coach Andre Schubert managed to stop the rot with an unbeaten run in the league lasting well into December.

Good? Good. However, there are signs that Schubert may not be the incredible manager his current record might indicate. Borussia crashed out of Europe following a late capitulation against Manchester City in December – they’d have pipped Sevilla to third place and Europa League football in 2016 with a point but were defensively too naïve while sitting ahead – before getting drubbed by a woeful Werder Bremen side in the Pokal. A ridiculous 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Leverkusen ended the club’s unbeaten run in the league and they overcame lowly Darmstadt with a lot of difficulty in the final game of 2015.

Whatever momentum the club had after that loss to Bayern appears to have slowly fizzled out, and now’s perhaps the first big test of Schubert’s reign. Can he fix the club’s defensive problems of late and generate some momentum of his own to take the club into Europe again this season? Don’t bet against it, but it won’t be an easy task.
