Hertha’s Baffling Strength
In terms of the shocks of the season so far, you only have to take a moment’s glance at the table. Sitting pretty below the Bayern/Dortmund hegemony are Hertha BSC in third, with an impressive total of 32 points at the halfway point, and no sign that things will stop.
Indeed, they seem to be getting better as the season goes on. Initially tipped to go down, their early performances did little to dispel this opinion despite picking up a handsome amount of points early on, and eventually the confidence gained from some of these somewhat fortuitous wins early in the season, alongside a genuinely talented axis of players including former Freiburg string-puller Vladimir Darida, ex-Bayern full back Mitchell Weiser and a few established names like Salomon Kalou and Vedad Ibisevic.
Despite this smattering of talented players, Pal Dardai is doing a ridiculously impressive job hauling his squad into third, and while it’s unlikely the capital club will finish in a Champions’ League berth come May, performances continued to get more impressive towards Christmas, with complete domination against Mainz on matchday seventeen denoted by their opponents not even scraping a shot on target.
