Leeds United host fellow promotion chasers West Brom at Elland Road tonight in a game that could have a major say in who clambers out of the Championship at the end of the season.
The game also sees the Whites to head to head with Kyle Bartley; a central defender who was hugely popular at the club during his time there in the 2016/17.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reported in April 2018 that Leeds wanted to bring Bartley back during the summer – when he was still at Swansea – before he opted to sign for tonight’s opponents instead.
Bartley has enjoyed some gametime under Darren Moore, but of late he has struggled for starts, as Craig Dawson and Ahmed Hegazi are usually preferred.
Bartley’s partnership with Pontus Jansson was so strong under Monk – the Swede has not been as commanding or consistent since – and having him at the back would have been a massive boost to Marcelo Bielsa this season.
That’s especially pertinent because of the level of defensive injuries Leeds have endured but also because they need leaders now that they are going through a tricky patch.
And if Bartley lines up on the bench at Elland Road tonight, it will be tempting for some Leeds fans to consider what might have been if they had managed to sign him during the summer.
