Barry Ferguson has told PLZ Soccer that he believes Ryan Kent will be Rangers’ top priority this summer, as the Gers look to land the Liverpool star on a permanent basis.
The 22-year-old has starred for the Gers during his season-long loan at Ibrox, having a hand in 15 goals this season. He has scored six times, and created another nine assists.
He has endeared himself to the Rangers support, providing an excellent assist in the 1-0 win over Celtic and even scoring against Rangers’ Old Firm rivals in the 2-1 defeat at Parkhead.
Former Rangers captain Ferguson believes landing Kent should be Gerrard’s top priority in the summer window, despite the Gers landing Jake Hastie, Jordan Jones and Steven Davis already.
“I think that’s a key signing, I’ve got to be honest with you,” Ferguson said. “I think he’ll be at the top of Gerrard’s wanted list, whether that’s permanent or [loan]. Gerrard’s going to have a good relationship with Liverpool.
“Whether it’s on loan or a permanent, I’m not really bothered as long as he’s playing in a Rangers jersey next season.”
The Scottish Sun’s latest report claims Kent is available for just £5million and that will be an enormous boost for the Teddy Bears, given previous reports have claimed Liverpool want £12million for the winger.
At £5million, Kent is much more affordable. It is a fee that is not out of the Gers reach, given they spent £3.5million on Connor Goldson last summer. Chairman Dave King has promised to back Gerrard this summer.
It remains to be seen if Liverpool will allow Kent to join Rangers on a permanent basis next summer, though Kent himself has said it is a “possibility” that he will wear a Light Blue shirt in 2019-20.
