Barry Douglas set for Leeds return after Instagram post, but contract ends in June

Barry Douglas has confirmed on Instagram that he will not be signing a permanent deal at Championship side Blackburn Rovers after his season-long loan deal came to an end – meaning he will return to Leeds, but his contract is set to expire.

Douglas, 31, moved to Blackburn last summer just weeks after Marcelo Bielsa’s team had gained promotion to the Premier League. Somewhat heartbraking for Douglas, it was the second time he left a club just months after winning promotion.

He only joined Leeds in July 2018 for a fee of £3million (Sky Sports) after a sparkling 2017-18 campaign in which he played a massive part in getting Wolves promoted. But he managed just 44 appearances for Leeds in two seasons under Bielsa.

That convinced the Scottish left-back to go on loan and he moved to Blackburn last summer. Many believed it was a move that would see Douglas leave permanently, given that he is now out of contract in June. He confirmed his decision on Instagram.

TBR’s view – What next for Douglas?

So, where now? Clearly, he is unlikely to sign a new deal at Elland Road given he has already left the club temporarily. A new side is likely this summer for the Scotland international, and the likelihood is that he remains in the Championship.

However, Douglas has played in Poland and Turkey and is not afraid to move abroad – while he may also consider a return north of the border. A boyhood Rangers fan, he also turned out 76 times for Dundee United. An intriguing summer ahead.
