Liverpool have started the season with the clear intention of living up to their pre-season billing. Jurgen Klopp’s men were tipped as Manchester City’s nearest challengers by many and that has proven the case. They have even managed to do so without their World Cup finalist centre-back Dejan Lovren. He has been nursing an injury he aggravated at the World Cup this summer.
Stepping up in his place has been the young defender Joe Gomez. The England international, who missed this summer’s World Cup with injury, has slotted in alongside Virgil van Dijk with aplomb. His performances have earned rave reviews and Liverpool clearly have a star on their hands.

He must be considered an absolute bargain as well.
When Liverpool snapped up Gomez from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2015 he cost them a fee in the region of £3.5 million. Such a fee now looks almost criminal.
He has been playing alongside Dutch international Van Dijk and has looked easily his equal. Considering that Liverpool had to pay Southampton a monster fee of £75 million for his services, the true bargain nature of that £3.5 million deal sinks in.
At this rate, Lovren might even have a problem forcing his way back into the Liverpool first-team.
