Six months after Arsenal interest, Barcelona could now pay £50m for ‘genius’ midfielder

Arsenal fans haven’t seen the name of Nabil Fekir mentioned for some time now but it seems he still hasn’t gone missing when it comes to transfer talk.

The Gunners were heavily linked with a move for Fekir back in the summer of 2021. Newcastle have since made enquiries as well, although a deal never even got off the ground at the start of the January.

But fast forward to the present, and Fekir is playing well again for Real Betis. He has seven goals and seven assists this season and looks every bit the quality attacking midfielder that attracted Arsenal in the first place. And that form has, it seems, got Barcelona looking on with intent.

90Min cites reports from Spain suggesting that Barca will make their move for Fekir this summer. Indeed, it’s claimed that the Spanish giants could pay around £50m for bring Fekir to the Nou Camp. That would represent another big outlay for a club who – supposedly anyway – are in financial ruin.

Fekir, like Houssem Aouar of Lyon, is a player who often gets a mention when it comes to the Gunners. But with Barcelona now sniffing, it would be a surprise to see his name surface again this summer.

TBR’s View: Arsenal Missed The Boat On Fekir

We feel like we’ve said that so many times in the last 12 months with Arsenal. They seem to keep missing out on players who get heavily linked with a move to The Emirates. Fekir, Aouar, Vlahovic, and more, we could go on.

The one plus point with not landing Fekir is he is now 28 and has never really had the consistency for a top, top player, despite being branded a ‘genius’ by Betis’ chairman.

Arsenal are buying younger talents recently who they can develop under Arteta. On this occasion, then, they’re probably happy to sit back and let Barcelona spend £50m on the Frenchman.
