Barcelona now want to sign Arsenal No.11 Gabriel Martinelli as the Spanish giants search for a new winger.

That is according to Mundo Deportivo.

So, what is the situation involving Barcelona and Gabriel Martinelli? Let’s take a look…

Barcelona want Gabriel Martinelli

Well – according to Mundo Deportivo – Barcelona have made signing a new left winger a priority this summer, following the departure of Ousmane Dembele to PSG.

The Spanish news outlet believe Martinelli – who Mikel Arteta recently admitted is “not satisfied” with his current situation at Arsenal – is on the shortlist, along with Napoli No.77 Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Brighton No.22 Kaoru Mitoma.

Mundo Deportivo explain how Barcelona would ideally like to sign Mohamed Salah – although that is impossible due to the finances required – so attention has turned to the Brazil international.

The Spanish giants are believed to be monitoring Martinelli closely following his outstanding 2022/23 campaign, in which he scored 15 goals in 36 Premier League appearances – while also providing five assists.

So far this season, the £180,000-a-week man has scored seven goals and assisted a further three in 28 appearances.

Arsenal in a strong position regarding Gabriel Martinelli

In our view, Arsenal are in a strong negotiating position with Martinelli – and it would be a major shock if Barcelona managed to sign the South American.

The £6m man is contracted to Arsenal until June 2027 and is currently valued at €100m (£85m) by the CIES Football Observatory.

Therefore, it will take a significant bid for the Gunners to even consider selling Martinelli, something Barcelona do not seem capable of offering right now.

A story from Marca claimed that Barcelona are ready to sell Raphinha – who admires Arsenal – to raise some much needed cash this summer, so talk of the Catalans making a move for Martinelli seems unfounded and almost impossible given the club’s financial situation.

Nevertheless, be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as anything can happen in football.
