Barcelona midfielder picks Manchester City when asked which club he would join, if he had to leave Nou Camp
It was a promising season for Riqui Puig. The Barcelona talent clocked up 24 of his 39 senior appearances for the Catalan giants under Ronald Koeman in 2020-21. But his future is up for debate and talking to Mundo Deportivo, Puig states he would choose Manchester City if he were to leave Barca.
Puig, 21, was in and out of the Barcelona side for the duration of 2020-21. The midfielder was an unused substitute on 28 other occasions – failing to make the Barcelona squad in just two of their 54 matches in 2020-21. According to fans on social media, the belief is that he has a future at Barca.
But four-time Spain Under-21 star Puig has entered the final two years of his contract at Barcelona. It is a while, but it also suggests that perhaps Barcelona do not rate Puig that highly. Were he the future of Barca, he would be on a longer deal. He spoke about his future to Mundo Deportivo.
Asked for the team he would join if he were to leave Barcelona, Puig said: “Because of the style of play and because they have a coach who understands football like me, Manchester City. But at the moment I am very happy at Barcelona. I am not planning to leave.”
Relationship would see a deal to take Puig to Manchester City from Barcelona easily struck
Even this summer, Barcelona have signed Eric Garcia and Sergio Aguero on free transfers from Manchester City. Aymeric Laporte, Ilkay Gundogan and other City players have been linked – while, of course, City have one of Barcelona’s best-ever managers in charge. City could do with a midfielder.
Both Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan have entered their thirties, so bringing in a younger, ball-playing midfielder is an option. Puig is more of a holding midfielder but able to create and score, too. However, Give Me Sport say he has a release clause in his contract worth £85million.
