Barcelona defender Sergi Roberto seduced by idea of playing under Pep Guardiola at Man City

According to Sport, Pep Guardiola is clear in wanting Man City to sign Barcelona defender Sergi Roberto this summer.

Guardiola believes the Spaniard would be the perfect signing as he ticks the boxes of a Citizens player. He admires his professionalism, attitude and dedication and feels the full-back would be a very useful addition with the style of play favoured at the Etihad Stadium.

Man City had sought to sign Roberto last summer but were knocked back by the 29-year-old. However, they could be given a clear path this year, as he will consider his future at the Camp Nou.

Roberto is waiting to hear if Barcelona will offer him a new contract with his current terms set to expire next year. It is the defender’s priority to stay at the La Liga giants but only if they present a satisfactory offer.

The 10-cap international would consider moving to Man City if he is not presented with a long-term deal. Roberto is seduced by the idea of playing under Guardiola and would look to secure a move if Barcelona decide they would like to sell him this summer.

Contact between the two clubs is already underway but no agreement is in place. Man City have informed Barcelona of their interest, while the Catalan outfit consider the idea of selling Roberto very interesting.

That’s because Roberto earns €10million-per-year (£165k-p/w), but turns 30 next February and could be replaced by younger options in Sergino Dest and Emerson Royal.

TBR’s view: Roberto would be an expensive Man City backup

While Guardiola admires what Roberto can offer, the Barcelona product would only be an expensive substitute at Man City. The Reus-born full-back would simply not occupy a prominent starting role over Kyle Walker of Joao Cancelo.

Instead, Roberto would take up a similar position to his current place at Camp Nou. He only started nine of his 15 La Liga outings this term due partly to injuries. Ronald Koeman also overlooked him against Real Madrid and favoured a backup role for the Copa del Ray final despite being fit.

Roberto’s status at Barcelona hardly befits his wage and would be a blot on the Citizens’ books if signed. Guardiola should be able to find a more suitable backup option for far less when other positions need prioritising first.
