Eric Abidal suggests that Barcelona could return for Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Eric Abidal has told Catalan newspaper Sport that Barcelona will be targeting Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during the summer.

The Gunners hitman was a target for the La Liga champions in January but the club decided not to pursue his signature.

With Luis Suarez injured, the Express claimed that Aubameyang might be the capture that Barcelona would chase as a replacement.

It now seems that the Catalan giants will return in the summer for a player who sees his contract expire in the summer of 2021.

Abidal told Sport: “It is logical that a strong number nine will come in during the summer. It is a necessity. We know that Suarez will come back strong but we still have to bring in a top player.

“We do not know if it will be young or experienced. We look only at the talent and the adaptation they may have.

“I know him (Aubameyang). He has a profile that has depth. He is important and in his team he is decisive. We’ll see what will happen.”

The Express did claim that Arsenal would likely want to recoup £50 million for the talisman.

That may change during the summer, however, when Aubameyang will have just one year left on his current deal.

The Gabon international has been at the Emirates Stadium for two years.

He signed from Borussia Dortmund and has found the net 57 times in 92 appearances for the Gunners.

Aubameyang is certainly Mikel Arteta’s best goalscoring threat and losing him would be catastrophic.

The Gunners are in danger of missing out on European football next season, however, and that could have a detrimental effect on their ability to keep hold of their star players.

Arsenal will be under pressure to sell if they don’t qualify for Europe and they won’t want to risk him running his contract down.

Aubameyang is paid £200,000-a-week (Spotrac) by Arsenal and that wage might not be sustainable with no European football on offer next season.

At 30-years-old, Aubameyang might view a move to Barcelona as one which is too good to turn down.

He will feature regularly in the Champions League at one of the best clubs in Europe and it could be his last chance to earn such a move.
