Barcelona and Tottenham swap deal mooted as €60m player ‘will definitely’ move

Tottenham Hotspur could endure a major squad overhaul if they are relegated from the Premier League this week.

Spurs face Everton on the final day, sitting two points clear of West Ham United, who are in action against Leeds United.

Regardless of whether Tottenham stay up, though, Spanish outlet Sport are reporting that Cristian Romero ‘will definitely leave’ in the upcoming transfer window.

Barcelona could offer player plus cash for Cristian Romero

The Argentine, who is under contract in North London until 2029, has missed a large chunk of 2026.

He was first suspended for four games before suffering a season-ending injury against Sunderland in April.

That meeting may well be his last for Spurs, with FC Barcelona now thought to have identified Romero as a centre-back target after ending their pursuit of Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni.

However, as Barca are expected to go big to strengthen their attack this summer, defensive reinforcements will be given a smaller budget.

When it comes to Romero, the outlet says he has a €60m release clause, but the Spanish giants will not pay that, instead, it’s claimed that they will only consider his addition for a smaller fee, even if that ‘means including a player in the deal’.

Exactly which Barcelona players could be offered to Tottenham for the stopper is not mentioned, though such a deal would surely hinge on Spurs not being in the Championship come 2026/27.

Roberto De Zerbi quizzed on Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham

With talk of a Romero exit ramping up, Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi was asked about the South American’s future on Monday.

However, he remained coy and said all decisions are going to be made once the 2025/26 season is over.

De Zerbi stated: “It is a good question, but it is the wrong timing, no? First of all now the focus is Chelsea,” he continued.

“Second point, Romero is a great player, and the most important is the behaviour and how much the player wants to stay in this club.

“We are going to take all the decisions after this season and after the Everton game.”
