Arsenal boss Unai Emery has identified Bayern Munich’s David Alaba and Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti has his summer transfer priorities, according to the Independent.
The Gunners boss is keen to overhaul his squad this summer and news of his top targets has emerged.
Emery has overseen a decent first season in charge at the Emirates.
His team currently sit fourth in the Premier League and are in contention to reclaim a Champions League place.
Both of these reported targets are regular starters with their current clubs and their availability remains to be seen.
The Daily Mail reported in February that Emery would have just £45 million to spend this summer.
Given that these players will cost substantially more, a top-four finish could see the club spend more.
Bayern are in the process of a €300 million overhaul of their own and the Independent claims that Alaba, a long term fixture, could make way for new recruits.
The Catalan giants are expected to try and reduce their wage bill this summer and have their own transfer targets.
These reported targets quite clearly imply that Emery has been unhappy with his back four this season.
Alaba, a player who has spoken of his boyhood love for Arsenal, would address the left-back situation for sure.
Barcelona defender Umtiti was part of France’s World Cup winning squad last summer and would represent a real coup.
The only slight worry in terms of the central defender is his fitness concerns.
The 25-year-old has missed a lot of football this season with a knee problem so the Gunners would need to tread carefully with that.
Regardless, it is clear that these two signings could throw Arsenal back into title contention in the future.
Both have a history of playing for serial title challenging outfits and that is exactly the sort of play that Arsenal needs to be attracting.
