Aston Villa have submitted a bid for Angers midfielder Baptiste Santamaria as their summer spending shows little sign of letting up, as per French outlet L’Equipe.
They report that Villa want the 24-year-old despite adding Douglas Luiz to their engine room last week, but have seen a 7 million euro (£6.3 million) opening offer rejected.
But the report also says that Santamaria is keen on a move to Villa Park despite having a contract with the French club that runs until 2022.
The opportunity to play in the Premier League could perhaps be tough to turn down after three seasons with Angers, but Villa will need to up their bid to get the midfielder to the west Midlands.
Villa have done some solid work on their midfield already this summer, and Marvelous Nakamba also looks set to be boosting their talent in the middle of the park.
With John McGinn, Conor Hourihane and Jack Grealish already there, getting Santamaria would give Dean Smith an even greater depth of riches to deal with the demands of the Premier League.
Buying from French can come with its pitfalls – for every N’Golo Kante, there’s a Henri Saivet, and some players fail to adapt to the higher pace of play.
But Santamaria wants to join and if Smith and his team have done their homework then they should be looking to push ahead – if the bidding is around £7 million then Villa should be able to meet those demands given some of the fees they’ve already paid out this summer.
