‘Back in blue’: 20-year-old posts on Instagram, confirming Rangers return

Serge Atakayi has confirmed that he is returning to Rangers on Instagram this summer after a loan spell in his home country of Finland with top-tier side SJK Seinäjoki.

The 20-year-old attacker made his debut for Rangers this season after shining in the club’s reserve side. Coming on during the second half of the 7-1 win over Motherwell, he suffered an injury was withdrawn 17 minutes later.

Following his recovery from the injury, Atakayi was loaned back to his home country with SJK Seinäjoki, where he played 10 times in all competitions – scoring one goal against Finnish giants HJK Helsinki in a 2-2 draw.

Now the Finnish season has finished, he posted on Instagram an emotional message SJK Seinäjoki fans thanking them for his time at the club – before stating that he is returning with “back in blue”.

TBR’s view

Another loan should be Atakayi’s next move. Rangers have already brought in Jordan Jones from Kilmarnock and Jake Hastie from Motherwell, pushing Atakayi further down the pecking order.

The Gers are also set to welcome back Jamie Murphy from injury, while already boasting Eros Grezda, Daniel Candeias, Glenn Middleton and Ryan Kent – though the latter may not return to Rangers after his loan expired.

Atakayi will struggle to build on his debut and if he is to show Steven Gerrard what he is all about, a loan is the bets move.
