Manchester City became the leading light for English clubs last night as they became the first to officially withdraw from the controversial European Super League.

City were the first of the big names to pull the plug and they started the domino effect. By the end of the night, all six English clubs had dropped out of the ESL, leaving the Spanish and Italian clubs to ponder their next move.
A number of players from varying clubs had tweeted throughout the day and into the evening to show their own personal disdain towards the ESL idea. Among them, were City players Raheem Sterling and defender, Aymeric Laporte.
And while Sterling simply had an ‘Ok, Bye’ message, Laporte took time to write a heartfelt statement on why he felt so passionate about the competition remaining as is for now.

Laporte’s message was heartfelt and echoed the thoughts of millions of players and fans around the world it seems.
The ESL has died for now at least. But stances like this from City, it’s players, and others around the English game will be important going forward to prevent any further attempts.
TBR View: Laporte one of a number to come out shining
The City star deserves credit but so do so many others. Liverpool’s players were also united in their stance, all tweeting at the same time last night to show their solidarity agains the ESL.
This has been an ill-judged and rotten move from the so-called ‘Big Six’. Fans, hopefully, won’t forget what’s been attempted and it will be interesting when fans return to grounds, if there is any sort of action.
