Alan Shearer has suggested to the Premier League website that Emi Martinez’s performance in Aston Villa’s weekend win must have been awkward for Arsenal, as he named the goalkeeper and Ezri Konsa in his Team of the Week.
Dean Smith’s men secured the three points on Saturday. Ollie Watkins scored the game’s decisive goal in the very early stages.
Arsenal asked questions of the Villans from that point. However, the home side produced a colossal defensive display to keep the Gunners at bay.
Martinez actually made considerably fewer saves than his counterpart (via Whoscored). However, his distribution was outstanding. And his command of the area was superb once again.
He certainly responded brilliantly after a poor game by his own standards against West Ham. And his performance prompted Shearer to include him in his Team of the Week.
“Another clean sheet. It must have been awkward for his former club Arsenal seeing him perform so well against them,” he told the Premier League website.
“A solid partnership again with Tyrone Mings that kept Arsenal quiet,” he added, when discussing Konsa’s inclusion.
In fairness to Mikel Arteta, keeping both Martinez and Bernd Leno happy this season was always going to be an almost impossible task.
Leno had done little wrong before getting injured last term. But Martinez could not have done a better job of making the most of his opportunity.
Of course, some Arsenal fans may have wished that the German had been sold instead. But that is not how the situation played out.
Martinez’s presence in the opposition goal did indeed hurt Arsenal at the weekend. But on the other hand, the performance of Mat Ryan also hints that Arteta once again boasts two very good goalkeepers.
