‘Awful’: Pundit condemns 24-year-old Arsenal star after dire performance against Liverpool

Arsenal’s miserable campaign reached a nadir on Saturday with the wretched capitulation against Liverpool.

Outplayed from the first minute until the last, they eventually went down 3-0 against an away side that has hardly been on sparkling form.

The result leaves Mikel Arteta’s side four points behind eighth-placed Everton, having played two more games than Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

Former Chelsea and Marseille striker Tony Cascarino was distinctly unimpressed, and singled out Dani Ceballos for particularly strong criticism.

The 24-year-old, who has made 68 appearances for Arsenal since arriving on loan from Real Madrid, frequently gave the ball away against Liverpool and was withdrawn from the action with less than an hour played.

Cascarino believes the team’s performance was reminiscent of a Championship side, and has called out the inconsistency that has been a hallmark of Arteta’s team this season.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “Arsenal have been most confusing team to me all season.

“They have had some great highs and unbelievable lows. (The defeat against Liverpool) was an incredible low.

Ceballos in midfield was awful, they gave away the ball too often and couldn’t lay a glove on Liverpool at all.

“They play a style that is more like a team that has come up from the Championship at times, not all the time –  West Ham away they started like that where they were 3-0 down and ended up trying to get back and be far more aggressive – yesterday they played like a team that had come up.”

Arsenal are next in action on Thursday when they take on Slavia Prague in the Europa League.
