Despite being the main man for Burnley at the beginning of last season, Tom Heaton is now surplus to requirements.
Burnley have Joe Hart as their number one stopper and with Nick Pope also on their books, Heaton is down the pecking order.
The 32-year-old is open to a January exit to ensure he is getting game time.
He told The Mirror: “Come the January transfer window, I’ve got to keep my options open. The one thing I’ve been consistent about in my career is moving clubs in order to play games.”
Aston Villa should be alerted to this situation and already be weighing up a move.
Goalkeeper has become a problem position at Aston Villa. Sam Johnstone was not replaced wisely.
Orjan Nyland has been preferred as the number one stopper for most of the season but his errors have cost the Villans plenty of points already this season.
Andre Moreira has not been deemed ready by either Steve Bruce or Dean Smith. And Mark Bunn is not a first-choice Championship standard goalkeeper.
Heaton is a proven quality goalkeeper in the top two tiers of English football and he has vast experience.
The three-cap England international, who was on stand-by during the World Cup this summer, would be the perfect capture for Aston Villa.
He could solve the goalkeeper issue at Villa Park and reignite his England hopes at the same time.
