Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has suggested Liverpool should be wary about facing the Spanish side in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Reds will take on Diego Simeone’s side over two legs in February and March, and will return to the scene of their triumph in the competition at the Wanda Metropolitano last season.

Liverpool are yet to lose in a European two-legged tie under Jurgen Klopp, but Cerezo is not fazed by that record.

Reacting to the draw, he told Marca: “I think the vertigo has to hit Liverpool. We knew that Liverpool or any other could play us.”

Atletico dumped Liverpool out of the Europa League in 2011.

The Reds trailed 1-0 on aggregate from the first leg, but managed to take the second leg at Anfield to extra time.

Liverpool went 2-1 up, but Diego Forlan struck late to seal their exit on away goals.

Cerezo warned: “It is not the first time we have eliminated them, we already eliminated him in UEFA. It is a great team, but we have Jan (Oblak).”

Liverpool’s attackers will likely have their work cut out trying to score past Oblak who, arguably alongside Alisson, is the best stopper in world football.

The Slovenia international, who signed a new deal that included a £103 million release clause earlier this year (Mirror), has kept an incredible 129 clean sheets in 231 appearances for the club.

TBR’s view – Liverpool will relish revenge

Cerezo’s comments are only likely to fire Liverpool up.

The players would love nothing more than to show that ‘vertigo’ will not be an issue.

There’s a good chance the Reds will be able to rise to the occasion, especially having enjoyed such good memories at the Wanda earlier this year.
