Atletico Madrid are increasingly confident of landing Spanish international defender Marcos Alonso this summer, according to the Daily Mirror.
They report that the former Bolton man, who joined the Blues for a reported £24 million (Sky Sports) back in 2016 flew out to Madrid last week for talks.
Maurizio Sarri changed the Chelsea system away to a 4-3-3 in 2018/19 and the shift away from a formation that uses wing backs hit Alonso’s form hard.
And Atletico seem keen to land a new left back this summer, with Felipe Luis and Bayern Munich bound Lucas Hernandez leaving the club.

Their left back swoop has seen the Spanish side linked with Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell, by AS, via the Sun, lately – with a £71 million bid reportedly tabled last month.
But if Diego Simeone’s side are getting Alonso instead, then that should be a major boost to Brendan Rodgers’ hopes of keeping the promising left back around next season.
Of course the likes of Manchester City could yet swoop – especially if Chilwell impresses during this week’s Nations League finals.
But one major suitor finding a new Premier League left back could settle a few nerves at the King Power Stadium about whether Chilwell will be running out for the Foxes next season.
