Atletico Madrid are eyeing a move for Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka to replace the departing Rodri, according to Spanish outlet AS.
The report says that the Spanish side are looking for a new holding midfielder if Manchester City land Rodri as expected and Xhaka’s international experience makes him an option they’re keen on.
They also report that Atletico have been keen on Xhaka since before he even moved to Arsenal from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach.
Moreover, Xhaka himself apparently wants the move. Diego Simeone’s men can offer Champions League football, having finished second in La Liga last season.
Xhaka, who Spotrac report earns £100,000 a week at the Emirates Stadium, is one of Arsenal’s most divisive players.
Many supporters feel he simply isn’t good enough for where their club need to be, but the fact that a Champions League side with standards as exacting as Atletico’s want him to replace a key player indicates his quality.
Xhaka’s combative style could well be a perfect match for Simeone’s all-in gameplan, but the report does also say that they are considering raiding local rivals Real Madrid for Marcos Llorente as well.
There’s no shortage of players who have left Arsenal and won trophies in recent year and at 26, Xhaka could well become another.
