Fabrizio Romano says long-time Leeds target Rodrigo De Paul in talks with Atletico
Leeds United could miss out on Rodrigo De Paul once again this summer, with the midfielder in talks with Atletico Madrid.
Leeds are long-time admirers of the classy Argentinian star. The Whites were linked throughout last summer, and have maintained an interest up until very recently.
IlMilanista claimed just this month that De Paul remained on the list of potential signings for Leeds. Liverpool, too, are also said to be keeping tabs.
However, taking to Twitter just a short while ago, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that De Paul is actually in talks with Atletico Madrid.
As the tweet says, there is no agreement in place yet. Udinese are looking for around £34m to sell De Paul. That fee is similar to what they demanded last summer, when Leeds eventually gave up on him.
Atletico’s interest will be a body blow to Leeds, though. The current Spanish champions, their pulling power and lure has never been greater than it is now.
For now, then, it looks like Leeds will need to move on. If anything, though, it will at least bring the long-running De Paul to Leeds saga to an end.
Rodrigo De Paul perfect for Leeds but always a big deal to pull off
Leeds’ issue with signing De Paul was always going to be that the player is so good, big teams would be interested. Naturally, even more now want him this summer after another good season.
If Atletico can stump up the cash then you can’t really blame De Paul if he opts for the Spanish capital. Champions League football, and the chance to work under Diego Simeone, both too good to turn down.
For Leeds, they’ll likely have a number of other targets. But they do need to strengthen after their brilliant Premier League return. Sadly, it appears that strengthening won’t include De Paul.
