Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has a decision to make this summer. He currently has two left-backs vying for the starting spot and he will possibly look to move one on.
Both Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett are attracting attention ahead of the 2019/20 season. According to The Daily Echo, one of those two will be sold to promote Jake Vokins into the first-team.
Aston Villa are alert to this situation. The Villans want to sign Targett in a £10m deal, according to The Sun. The 23-year-old is seen as the perfect player to strengthen the left-back department.
Targett is young but has plenty of experience in the top two divisions. The ex-England youth international could compete with Neil Taylor for Aston Villa’s left-back spot.
But Aston Villa’s hopes of signing Targett could be dashed by two Champions League clubs. Two European heavyweights will target Bertrand this summer.
According to The Daily Mail, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan both want Bertrand. Atletico Madrid are eyeing a replacement for Lucas Hernandez, who is heading to Bayern Munich.
Meanwhile, Inter want to push up the league table after a fourth-place finish in Serie A. Bertrand, 29, is an experienced left-back who could be available for less than £10m.
If Bertrand does complete his move to Atletico Madrid or Inter Milan, then Aston Villa might need to look elsewhere for a new left-back.
