Atalanta United president Darren Eales believes Miguel Almiron just needs some confidence before he kicks on at Newcastle United, The Mirror reports.
Almiron joined Newcastle last January in a £21m deal (figure via The Mirror). But the attacking midfielder has not scored or provided an assist in 18 games since his move to England.
Prior to joining Newcastle, the Paraguay international was the standout performer for Atlanta. Eales has compared his start at Newcastle to his first few games with the MLS club and has used that to urge fans to have patience.
Eales on Almiron
Speaking at the Leaders in Sport Summit (via The Mirror), Eales said: “It took Migie a little bit of time to find his feet when he made the move from Paraguay to the Argentinian league and the same with us in our first MLS season. He went eight games without scoring and had not scored at home and you could feel it getting pent up a little bit.
“Then he scored a hat-trick against Houston where everything he hit went in. He got that hat-trick and the floodgates then opened. His pace with the ball is incredible. I always likened it to Gareth Bale from my time at Spurs – he always seems quicker when he has got the ball than without the ball. It is about confidence. I just hope he can get that first goal and then they will come in waves.”
Almiron has shown glimpses of his ability at Newcastle so far without adding the end product to his game. By now, he should have adjusted to life in England with a bit more to show for his efforts – especially at the price Newcastle paid.
But the 25-year-old just needs that confidence-boosting goal or assist to kick on. Eales knows Almiron well and has tipped him for big things. Newcastle fans could be in for a treat if Almiron kicks on.
