Leeds United need defenders this summer. Gaetano Berardi has seemingly left the club after his contract expired, while Ben White’s future remains in doubt – but a Real Madrid star could ease Marcelo Bielsa’s concerns.
Though no confirmation has been made about Berardi’s future, his contract expired at the end of the season and has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury. His absence is a blow, given he can play anywhere in defence.
White’s future remains in doubt. Arguably the club’s best player during promotion to the Premier League, the Whites are reportedly desperate to sign him permanently – but they face competition, and Brighton may keep him.
Right now, it leaves Leeds without cover for Luke Ayling – unless teenager Cody Drameh is considered back-up – and with just one recognised centre-back in Liam Cooper. Pascal Struijk is emerging, but still a rookie.

The Whites need a defender and at £9million, they could do a lot worse than raiding Real Madrid for 22-time Spain international Nacho. The 30-year-old would be absolutely perfect for Bielsa, especially
That is because Nacho can play anywhere in defence. He has appeared numerous times for Spain and Madrid at full-back, whether that is right-back or left-back – but is naturally a central defender.
Portuguese outlet A Bola have claimed that Valencia and Benfica are interested in Nacho, with Real Madrid willing to cash in on the experienced star for a fee of just £9million. He managed just 10 appearances during 2019-20.
A four-time Champions League winner, Nacho is a steal at £9million and given he can play anywhere in defence – he would be ideal for a Leeds side lacking in options at the back. Bielsa loves versatility, and Victor Orta loves a bargain.
