Newcastle United are reportedly looking to lure Scott Dann to Tyneside from Crystal Palace for a bargain £6million this summer, but surely Scottish champions Celtic would be a better move for the veteran defender.
According to The Sun (5 June, page 52), Newcastle want to sign 32-year-old Dann in a bid to add some experience to their back line. The Toon have plenty of options at centre-back, but Rafa Benitez has used three at the back.
If Benitez opts to use a three-man defence more often, he will need more cover. The Magpies currently boast Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez, Ciaran Clark and more.
It is believed a bid of £6million will be enough to land Crystal Palace defender Dann. Surely, then, that should tempt Celtic into solving their woes at centre-back by bringing some experience into their back line.
The Hoops have lost Dedryck Boyata, who has joined German Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin while Filip Benkovic has returned to Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City following his loan spell at Celtic.
It leaves Celtic with Jozo Simunovic, Jack Hendry, Kris Ajer and Marvin Compper. But Compper and Hendry have struggled at Parkhead, while Simunovic has been somewhat indifferent.
Celtic need an experienced centre-back to partner alongside Ajer, and Dann fits the description to a tee. With 149 top-flight appearances to his name, Dann has what it takes to impress at the top level.
Comfortable with the ball at his feet and more than capable of scoring from set pieces, £6million is a bargain for Dann and would certainly solve the issue at the back for the Hoops.
