At just £1million, Scottish Premiership defender would be unreal Rangers signing

Rangers are reportedly interested in signing Hearts centre-back John Souttar this summer for £1million – and he would be an absolute bargain for Steven Gerrard’s side.

The Daily Record claim the 22-year-old defender has been eyed by Rangers with the Teddy Bears set to lose Gareth McAuley at the end of his contract, while Joe Worrall is expected to return to Nottingham Forest after his loan.

Rangers need a centre-back this summer, then. Scotland international Souttar is more than proven at Scottish Premiership level, significantly improving Hearts when fit.

He has played 30 times for Craig Levein’s side this season, and in those matches, Hearts have picked up 19 wins. A hip injury saw him miss 15 matches, of which Hearts only managed to win six times.

At just £1million, then, Souttar’s presence in defence helps win matches. In those 30 matches, Hearts conceded 27 goals. Without him, they conceded 23 goals in just 15 games.

Souttar is an excellent defender, willing to put his body where it hurts. He has already captained Hearts, and is more than adept at playing out from the back which will suit Gerrard’s style of play.

Can Rangers lure him to Ibrox? Hearts are renowned to be tight on finances, and that saw Rangers take advantage last summer by bringing in Kyle Lafferty for a nominal fee from Tynecastle.

Even if a £1million approach is blocked, Rangers should be willing to pay a lot more for a defender with such impressive stats in the Scottish Premiership. He would be the ideal centre-back signing this summer.
