Tottenham Hotspur are being linked with a move for Chris Smalling, but surely Everton have to challenge for the English defender.
According to Corriere dello Sport, the north Londoners are interested in the Manchester United player, who has rediscovered his mojo out on loan at AS Roma this season.
The 6ft 4in colossus has been superb for the Italian outfit, making 24 appearances in all competitions so far.
Fifth-placed Roma are challenging for a finish amongst the Champions League places, and Smalling’s fine form is giving them a chance of doing just that come May.
Smalling being linked with Spurs is understandable given his time working with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.
Corriere say United want around £16.5 million for the 31-year-old, and at the price, Everton surely have to consider a move.
TBR’s view – Everton need organiser Smalling
Everton have taken several of United’s players down the years, and Smalling is one they should be all over – as it were, Gazzetta dello Sport (via Football Italia) actually reported new interest from the Merseyside outfit a couple of days ago.
Throughout 2019/20 the Toffees have had defensive problems, especially from set-pieces and especially under previous manager Marco Silva.
Yerry Mina has shown decent form in parts, but on the whole it hasn’t really been good enough by Everton from a defensive standpoint.
They may sneak into Europe next season under Carlo Ancelotti, but reinforcements at the back will still be needed even if that happens.
Smalling, who earns £70,000-a-week back at United (Spotrac), could be the experienced, organised leader the team have been lacking this season.
He has bags of Premier League experience having played 219 games in the competition, and at £16.5 million, Ancelotti and Marcel Brands surely have to consider a move.
