Dean Smith broke his silence last night after his Aston Villa sacking and Tyrone Mings took to Twitter to issue a two-word response.

Smith had been at the helm at Villa for a little over three years. He successfully brought them up from the Championship, kept them in the Premier League in the following season and managed to lead them to an 11th-placed finish in the campaign after.

Villa seemed to be on the up and they were expected to really kick on this season. However, after five successive defeats in the Premier League, the club’s owners decided that it was time for a change.

Smith was shown the door over the weekend and the Englishman issued a statement through the League Managers Association yesterday.

Dean Smith issues statement after Aston Villa sacking

In his statement, Smith wrote: “To be appointed the Head Coach of Aston Villa, the club I supported throughout my childhood, was and remains something I am extremely proud of. My initial remit was to try and lead the club back to the Premier League within a two-year period.

“Sitting in 15th position in the Championship when I arrived in the October, managing to lead the team on a record-breaking ten-match winning run and into the play-offs, where we would eventually win promotion thanks to a memorable day at Wembley Stadium, was, without doubt, an achievement that I will always look back on with pride.

“Having led the club back to the Premier League ahead of schedule and at the first time of asking after three years in the Championship, the next challenge was to help overhaul the squad and create a group good enough to survive that all-important first season back in the Premier League and, in doing so, I believe those achievements allowed the club to accelerate its ambitions to become an established Premier League club.

“My belief was that we would continue our progression this season. I understand the football industry and of course, I respect the owners’ decision, but I felt that with important players soon returning to full fitness we would achieve a top-half finish.”

Smith went on to thank the club, the board, the people and the players he worked with and most importantly, the fans, who always supported him.

Tyrone Mings reacts on Twitter

Mings was a hot topic of discussion in Smith’s final few games in charge. The ex-Aston Villa boss surprised everyone by dropping him for the game against West Ham, which turned out to be his penultimate game in charge of the club.

The defender, predictably, wasn’t happy with the decision but it seems like there’s nothing but respect from his end towards the manager who signed him back in 2019, initially on loan and then on a permanent deal.

As Smith issued his statement through the LMA yesterday, Mings retweeted the post with the quote: “Pure class” followed by a purple heart emoji.
