Jack Butland, who was linked with Aston Villa in the summer, has suffered a major fall from grace. The goalkeeper could be dropped by Stoke City and the England national team in the same week.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Stoke’s midweek loss against Preston North End, Potters boss Nathan Jones admitted he might have to drop Butland. It followed another error-riddled performance from the England international amid speculation surrounding his future.
Jones claimed that media talk was distracting Butland and it might be best if he spent some time on the sidelines. The 26-year-old’s form has been erratic after he failed to complete a £25m move to Aston Villa in the summer window, as per Sky Sports News.
On Wednesday night, Butland made two glaring errors. He let two tame shots through his hands to put Preston 2-0 up – a deficit that Stoke never recovered from. The game ended 3-1 and Butland might pay for his poor performances.
Jones told Sky Sports: “We are travelling on the bus and there’s a big story about Jack being left out of the England squad, it’s all unsettling. Maybe I need to put him out of the firing line and wait until the window shuts to get his head focused because all the stories are about what’s not happening to Jack rather than him being Stoke City goalkeeper.”
Butland’s England omission will not come as a surprise. With Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope and Tom Heaton playing well in the Premier League, it looks like Butland will miss out.
Perhaps a spell on the sidelines will be beneficial. The Potters have Adam Federici to call on so they have experience and depth in the goalkeeper department.
