The goalkeeper position at Aston Villa has become a contentious discussion point between the club’s fans this season. They started the campaign with Jed Steer between the sticks. However, Steve Bruce sanctioned a move for Norwegian stopper Orjan Nyland and sent Steer packing. The results have been fairly mixed.
It came about after their financial restraints in the summer after failing to win promotion to the Premier League. Without them, it was likely that Aston Villa would have made a permanent move for Sam Johnstone.
The former Manchester United goalie had spent the previous two seasons on loan at Villa Park and he had become popular with the Aston Villa fanbase.
In the end, Aston Villa failed to bring in Johnstone. He instead joined local rivals West Brom in a deal worth around £6.5 million.
Aston Villa fans were undoubtedly disappointed not to get the player, who played 70 times for the club over two seasons.
However, he has not exactly struck such a rapport with West Brom fans. Baggies supporters had high expectations from their goalkeeper, after years of consistency from Ben Foster. However, Johnstone has appeared nervous and shaky on occasions, with West Brom fans not yet 100 per cent sold on his suitability.
Aston Villa fans will take little comfort in that fact, considering their own goalkeeping problems. But hopefully, Nyland can start to improve and leave Johnstone a bitter memory.
