QPR have addressed their centre-back shortage with a surprise signing this weekend. German defender Toni Leistner has joined the club on a free transfer from FC Union Berlin. After losing Nedum Onuoha and Jack Robinson this summer it was a deal that the Championship side had to make.
They were, however, not the only club interested in the player this summer. Aston Villa were also said to be keen in the player according to the Berliner Kurier.
In missing out on the player, Villa have missed out on an absolute gem of a bargain.
The 27-year-old was a wanted commodity in the United Kingdom this summer. The likes of Norwich and Hull have also been mentioned and with good reason. He is a perfect player for the Championship.
Tall and strong he will handle the physical side of the English second-tier with ease. But he is more than just a meet-the-ball no-nonsense defender. Leistner is quicker than his appearance suggests. His passing is excellent and he is not afraid to take the ball out of defence. He is, similar in playing style to a young John Terry.
So he would have been an excellent replacement for the former England captain if Aston Villa had managed to lure him to Villa Park. The fact he was available on a free transfer just made him even more perfect for Aston Villa considering their financial troubles.
The club has missed out on a gem and will now have their work cut out to find a better affordable alternative.
