Aston Villa will be disappointed at details of 2016 deal as Idrissa Gana Gueye nears Everton exit

Reports in France are suggesting that Everton and Paris Saint-Germain have come to an agreement over the transfer of Idrissa Gana Gueye.

Le Parisien is claiming PSG will pay €32 million (£28.7 million) for the Senegalese captain this summer, ending a long-running transfer saga.

But Aston Villa fans might be a little disappointed at one development of this deal.

Aston Villa sold Gueye to Everton in 2016. It came after a disappointing season for the club when they were relegated to the Championship. The whole club, at the time, was in a state of disarray.

Amidst it all, Everton snapped up the Senegalese star for a fee reported by The Guardian to have been in the region of £7.1 million. The report claimed this was a buy-out clause Gueye had in his Aston Villa contract, in the event of relegation.

Gueye had been one of Aston Villa’s only shining lights from that season. He was one of the best midfielders, statistically, in the Premier League, despite Villa’s failures.

However, according to the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa did not include any sell-on clause in the deal that saw Gueye move to Goodison Park. It could certainly be that as Everton paid his buy-out clause, Aston Villa had no real opportunity to insert one.

A 10 percent clause would have seen Aston Villa potentially pocketing near to £3 million this summer. Whilst not big bucks, every little would have helped Aston Villa’s financial books.

Then again, considering the way Aston Villa have spent their money this summer, it doesn’t appear finances are anything to worry about.
