Jack Marriott was the hero for Derby County in the play-off semi-final. He came off the bench at Elland Road and scored twice to inspire the Rams to a dramatic comeback victory.
Now his attention turns to the play-off final on Monday when Derby lock horns with Aston Villa. It is a one-match shootout at Wembley to see which team wins promotion.
But it could have been a different story for Marriott this season. Last summer, he was wanted by a host of clubs, including Aston Villa.
After scoring 33 goals for Peterborough United, it was no surprise to see a Championship scrap for his signature. Among the interested teams was Aston Villa (as per The Sun).
The Villans were searching for a striker to replace Lewis Grabban. Marriott was one of their top targets but Derby won the race.
Since moving to Pride Park, Marriott has scored 12 goals in 42 games. He also has five assists. It has been a transition season for the 24-year-old but this is a reasonable, if not spectacular, goal return.
The good news for Derby fans is that Marriott has broken his 2019 goal drought. He had only scored once in 2019 (in the FA Cup) before the Leeds game. At one point, he looked on course to easily hit 20 goals.
Aston Villa have Tammy Abraham at centre-forward. The Chelsea loanee has scored 26 goals, which has bettered Marriott’s tally, although he is only on loan.
But the whole season boils down to the Wembley final. Marriott has the opportunity to deliver play-off heartbreak for Aston Villa just one year after he was linked with a move.
