Aston Villa have been rocked by the news that they don’t hold an option to sign Tyrone Mings during the summer, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 25-year-old was a deadline day recruit from Bournemouth and he has been excellent in the four matches he has played.

The Villans have slipped off the pace in the race for a top-six finish, but that hasn’t been down to Mings.

He was once seen as the next big thing when he signed for the Cherries from Ipswich Town.

Then a left-back, he moved for £8 million, but a series of injuries hampered his progress.

These days he is reinvented as a central defender and he hasn’t disappointed at Villa.

Although Dean Smith’s team haven’t won when Mings has played, his performances on a personal level have been good.

It speaks volumes that the Villa faithful are up in arms about the latest development that the club doesn’t hold a mandatory option to sign the defender.

If Mings can stay fit he would represent a quality signing for any second-tier outfit.

The challenge for Villa is to show him during the next couple of months that they are serious about challenging for promotion next season.
